My name is Rob. I’m a member of a well known band. I’ve been travelling with them for 6 years now, from one gig to another. I’ve seen gigs cancelled, schedules changed, and payments delayed. I’ve seen people leave and join. Oftentimes I feel that I’ve seen enough.
What do I do for the band, you ask? Good question. I used to be the front man. But now I teach new band members how to use instruments and put up a great show every sleepless night. I convince them how great it is being a band member.
But there is one thing that I could only wish I could tell them straight-things are not as great as they used to be for band members anymore.
Has the band lost it? Not really. In fact, it gets more gigs than what it used to. But the band leaders do not show the band members the same respect and concern as they used to. They would change the schedules, song list, the lyrics and the chords without proper advance notice. Especially if they know that the band members would not sing along to the chorus. They will hold on to the band members’ well deserved shares, just so they could buy new instruments for a new gig.
It’s not wrong to aspire for new opportunities, so please don’t get me wrong. What I find wrong is that the band members had to suffer just so the leaders could fund their world tour.
So now a lot of band members (including myself) ask themselves: Is it time to leave the band?
